How to Hide the Electronics on a Honda CB550 Café Racer
Every CB550 café racer build hits the same wall. You pull the side covers, cut the seat pan, and suddenly the ugliest part of the bike is on full display: the battery, the regulator/rectifier, the starter solenoid, and forty years of crusty wiring hanging in the triangle. The stock Honda setup was never meant to be seen. Café racers expose it. Here's how to fix that properly— without zip-tying components to the frame and hoping for the best.
Why the Frame Triangle Matters
On a CB550 or CB500, the open triangle under the seat is the visual center of the bike. Judges look there. Buyers look there. Every photo of your finished build shows it. A clean triangle separates a professional build from a garage hack, and the only way to get one is to relocate and consolidate the electronics.
You have three options:
1. Zip ties and electrical tape. Free, and it looks like it. Components vibrate loose, wires chafe on the frame, and you'll be chasing electrical gremlins within a season.
2. Fabricate your own tray. Totally doable if you have a welder, sheet metal tools, and a free weekend. Most builders' first attempt doesn't come out of planned if you don't have the right tools. Mostly in how the bends come to life and the lack of a sharp bend will ruin the looks of any custom box.
3. A purpose-built under seat electronics tray. Bolt-in, designed around the CB550/CB500 frame, with mounting for the m-unit and components in one consolidated unit.
